While the area that is now Chesapeake was an integral factor in the colonial past of the state of Virginia, the independent city was not officially founded until 1963. The community was previously a part of South Norfolk in the early 1900s. The Dismal Swamp Canal was an important waterway in early conflicts, and visitors can explore the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Those interested in Civil War history will want to explore the Virginia Civil War Trails as well. The Chesapeake Arboretum offers an opportunity to learn about the horticulture of the area.
